I am absolutely smitten by this gorgeous girl I had the privilege to photograph! Mom and dad had me come for an in-home newborn portrait session at just over two weeks old. The day was perfect, though I added additional light with off-camera flash and a white reflector to really amp up the quality of light falling on this little angel dressed in pink.

We photographed baby A on the bed and in her crib, some photos of mom and dad holding her, and a few fun photos of mom and dad holding her tiny little feet. So precious! We took our time in this session so that baby A was always comfortable, sleepy, and laying in whatever position she chose for natural, simple, baby-led posing that will never go out of style.

With these types of sessions I love doing a fun Series of 9 framed piece where I capture super closeup shots of all the little details: eyes/eyelashes, ears, fingers, toes, lips, etc. These are a great way to tell a story all in one frame — and these details change so quickly!

Mom makes a heart with her fingers around her newborn daughter's tiny feet.

*If you’re having a little one soon please contact me about booking a session. I also offer Fresh 48 sessions where I visit you in the hospital to capture these moments within the first two days, or I am able to come to your home after you’re released from the hospital.

**Because they grow so fast ask me about the Grow With Me package where we photograph your baby as a newborn but also at other milestones through their first birthday (i.e. newborn, 3 months old, sitting, first steps, etc). This allows you to create a baby album of their first year.

Seasons in photography…

What’s your favorite season for scheduling a portrait session? Maybe it’s spring with the promise of growth and renewed life. Summer with the flowers, beautiful sunsets, warm breezes through prairie grass in the late afternoon. Many love autumn seeing the landscape ablaze with color on all sides.

Winter whites with snow and the joy of the holidays with a splash of bold colors are fun to capture.

I don’t have a favorite photography season. Each season has something new to enjoy and wonderful to capture. The main thing in each season is photographing YOU and your family or pet in a way that says, “yes! That is exactly who they are!”

I also love working in a studio environment where the light and background are consistent regardless of the season or the time of day. In fact, that is my preferred place to photograph due to the consistency. I love when images in a series, taken at different times, all blend together beautifully because of consistent light and backdrop.

This type of photograph is all about YOU and you won’t get lost in the background as it competes with its splendor for attention from the viewer. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy both styles a lot, but my preference for ongoing series in a home is definitely going to be studio portraits.

Stand-alone portraits or series all photographed at the same time look wonderful in nature, but equally wonderful when captured in the studio in a simple style that is timeless and clean looking.

Whichever your preferred style, contact me to discuss booking a portrait session for your newborn, family, or pet. I look forward to hearing from you!

What’s in a name…?

I’m just a simple down-home prairie girl from southeast Wisconsin who loves to photograph newborns, children, families, and pets. Check out my website to learn more about my style and my desire to get the images off your phone or computer and get them printed so that you can enjoy them every day.

I’m a simple down-home girl from the southeast Wisconsin prairie who loves taking photographs your family will love for generations. I am equally passionate about getting the photographs off the digital devices and onto your walls where you can enjoy them every day in the simplest and most impactful way as professionally printed heirloom quality products.

I have a lifelong love of the book series Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Combining this love of the simple sweet life on the prairie with creative endeavors that could financially support myself, years ago I decided to name a new handcraft business prairie girl co. Like Tiffany & Co. or NY & Co., but I chose lower case letters to emphasize the sweet simplicity.

A little over a month after opening that business, where I created knit and crochet toys, Christmas ornaments, and other small home decor items, I bought a lively Engapoo puppy, named Annie, who is the most cat-like dog I have ever met. I have not (yet) been able to continue the crafting business due to her obsession with yarn and anything that moves that I’m currently working with.

Well, now that I have (technically) two businesses I decided to add a descriptor to each name so that you would have some clue what I sell. That’s always helpful, right? So, prairie girl co. | Photography was officially born!
